AdBlue® Diesel Exhaust Fluid Explained

What is AdBlue®?

Your vehicle uses Diesel Exhaust Fluid, commonly known as AdBlue®, as an additive to substantially reduce the nitrogen oxide emissions into the environment.

This is achieved by the Selective Catalytic Reduction System in your vehicle, which injects AdBlue® into the exhaust pipe. The fluid reacts with nitrous gases (NOx) from the exhaust and converts it to harmless nitrogen and water.
AdBlue® is a non-hazardous, non-flammable and colourless fluid.

AdBlue® Consumption

The consumption of AdBlue® is dependent on the vehicle and driving style. AdBlue® may require refilling between services.

AdBlue® Level Messages

The AdBlue® tank monitors the amount of remaining fluid and will alert the driver when it is getting low. Depending on the calculated range of the AdBlue®, different messages are displayed on the instrument cluster. Refer to your owner’s manual for when these messages will be displayed. The vehicle can be driven without speed or power restrictions until the AdBlue® tank is empty. However, once empty, engine restart will be prohibited.

AdBlue® Refilling

AdBlue® can be refilled via the AdBlue® refill port, which is easily accessible next to the diesel fuel filler. Your Holden dealer can help to refill your AdBlue® tank at any time. Otherwise, you can perform the refill yourself (refer to your owner’s manual for detailed instructions).

You can purchase refill containers from your Holden dealer. Refill containers are also available at many fuel stations and other automotive retail outlets. Only use AdBlue® that complies with ISO standard 22241-1.

Important Points

  • It is not recommended to refill at AdBlue® pumps that exist in many fuel stations as they are for commercial vehicles (trucks and buses). The flow-rate will be too high and the nozzle may not fit your vehicle.
  • Since AdBlue® has a limited shelf-life, check the date of expiry before refilling.
  • AdBlue® freezes at a temperature of approximately -11°C. Do not attempt to fill at temperatures below 0°C.
  • It is recommended to store your AdBlue® containers in a dry environment that is less than 30°C and away from direct sunlight. It is not advisable, therefore, to store containers in your vehicle.
  • Never add AdBlue® directly to the fuel tank. If AdBlue® is added to the fuel tank, do not drive the vehicle or start the engine. Contact your dealer immediately.
  • Avoid contact of AdBlue® with your eyes or skin. In the case of eye or skin contact, rinse off with water.
  • Avoid contact of AdBlue® with the vehicle paintwork. In case of contact, immediately rinse off with water.
